Building Information Modelling (BIM) for Practitioners
BIM is a process for the creation and use of information on Infrastructure projects such as buildings, bridges,
railways or airports, etc. BIM is a relatively new subject, so this course will give you the specialist knowledge and
make you more useful to the organizations already using or introducing BIM.
This course is for students that have completed relevant pervious engineering courses or existing employees that
want to specialize in BIM.
The student must have completed the African Academy Multi Discipline Drawing Office Practice course or an
equivalent course from another institute. Completion of advanced courses in the engineering disciplines below
would be desirable, but not essential.
The above requirements can we waived upon request and when supported by a written reference from a recognized
employer confirming relevant experience and suitability to be a BIM practitioner.

- BIM Basics – what is BIM, why is it important and how is it used?
- Understanding commonly used BIM terms/ definitions
- Physical Assets and how they are created/managed
o Organisational requirements
- Required outcomes – understanding the value of BIM and Lifecycle Information Management
- BIM maturity, Standards and classification – local and International
- Employers Information Requirements (EIR)
- Work-flow and Levels of development/detail
- Discipline appreciation – to include Content creation tools and meta-data creation where applicable
o Civil Engineering/ Structural steel and concrete
o Scheduling and simulation
o Cost/Project Controls
o Contractual/documentation requirements
o Programme/Project Management
- Coordination, collaboration, work sharing, Remote team working
- The Common Data Environment (CDE)
- Formats and information exchange (CAD data, IFC’s CoBIE, etc.)
- BIM Planning – Roles, responsibilities, execution plans, hand over
- Construction – Scheduling/simulation, change management/RFI’s/Variations
- Cost control – feed back to cost/estimation
- Commissioning – as built verification/asset condition baselines
- Operations & Maintenance – faults, predictive and reactive maintenance, change control
- Portfolio/Asset management – retirement/refurbishment of Assets
Four months (on a part time basis)
- BIM Modeller
- BIM Coordinator
- BIM Manager (after required on-the-job experience)
Course Fees (R 25 000)
R10 000 deposit and the balance to be paid in 3 equal instalments. Course fees also include a laptop. Please note
that annual fee increases, not in excess of 10%, may apply.
Upon completion of the course the student will be provided with access to an on-line examination portal that will
issue an internationally recognised BIM certification upon successful completion
