How do you qualify as a draughtsman in South Africa?

Are you interested in qualifying as a draughtsman in South Africa, but you are unsure of where to start? Kickstart your career in structural draughting with African Academy’s MDDOP (Multi-Disciplinary Drawing Office Practice) course! Our MDDOP course will introduce you to all draughting fields and equip you with basic draughting skills. Read on to find out what steps you need to take to qualify as a draughtsman, as well as the admission requirements and the course structure.

Admission Requirements:

Ideally, students need to have studied Mathematics, Physical Science, and Technical Drawing at Matric level, but we have specifically designed bridging courses to assist students who have not studied these subjects. These three-month bridging courses adequately equip students with the foundations they need to begin their studies in draughting.

Selection Procedure:

A candidate who meets our admission requirements will enter a selection process that consists of a PIB (Potential Index Battery) test and an interview.

Certification

On successful completion of the programme, the student will receive a National certificate from the Department of Higher Education and an African Academy statement of results. A qualified learner will be able to draught basic technical drawings and use industry-standard software. On successful completion, a student can study towards an Engineering qualification (Rated N4, N5, N6). Students can also progress their studies in Engineering Design & Draughting courses. Other immediate opportunities are working as a CAD operator as a Junior Draughtsman.

Course Structure

This course covers different disciplines of Engineering such as Building, Mechanical, Piping, Electrical and Structural Steel Detailing. Most of these disciplines are done on a computer with draughting software.
